Case study adverts
well.
What is the product in the advert?
The product in the advert would be Pepsi which is a company which sells sodas and soft drinks.
The advert was made in 1984 which viewers would have seen on both the TV and newspapers.
Where would the advert be displayed?
The advert would've been displayed on television and newspaper articles and I found this information on google. There was websites detailing the time of the campaign and what it was for.
Who is the advert created for?
The advert would have been created globally because Pepsi is a brand which is known all over the world and lots of people drink their products. Pepsi is well known so they wouldn't market this for just a specific country and they have Michael Jackson on the advert who was also well known all over the world as well.
This is an advert for nike:
What is the product in the advert?
Here is a advertising campaign which involved famous American football player Colin Kaepernick and this campaign was with Nike.
The product in this advert would've been Nike as they want to be associated with protests on trending topics such as racism.
When is the advert from?
This advert is from the nike ad campaign which was around in 2017-2018.
The advert would have been displayed in as many places of advertisement as nike could have possibly done because the whole message of the advert is a big topic in the current day.
It would've been shown on television, youtube and posters.
Who is the advert created for?
The advert would've been created for everyone all over the world to inform and educate them on racism and to try and to and raise awareness on racial inequality so it would have been aimed at as many people as possible.
PEE:
Point: For the Michael Jackson Pepsi advert on the newspaper and posters the aim would've been to increase sales because Pepsi were already well know before they got Michael Jackson to promote their product so by adding a famous person drinking their product it would been used by Pepsi and their sole purpose would've been to try an increase sales by implementing a famous person in their adverts because fans of Michael Jackson would have seen this and thought if Michael Jackson is drinking Pepsi I want to do the same. Example: There is a moment in the advert which shows a boy going into Michael Jackson's dressing room and finds a glass of Pepsi he then proceeds to drink it and turns into Michael Jackson.
Explain:The advert achieves the aim because people see this and if they are huge fans of Michael Jackson which a lot of people are then they would have also want to drink Pepsi as well.
Explain: the advert achieves the aim by making people want to drink Pepsi products.
Point
The adverts target audience for both of the Pepsi commercials would have been pretty much everyone because Pepsi is a well known brand and they would've wanted to gain as much recognition as possible as well. For the Nike advert it would have been for everyone as well. The age, gender, lifestyle and interests would all be the same. This is because both advertising campaigns wants people of all ages and races to be aware of their products so there would not be any specific target audience.
Example
There is a moment in the advert where a little boy walks into Michael Jackson dressing room and finds a Pepsi bottle and drinks it. He then transforms into Michael Jackson and this would be a moment in the advert which would appeal to everyone because people who are fans of Michael Jackson would have wanted to feel the same way the kid did in the advert. Then for the Nike advert the aim would be to show that all races are the same and this is done by adding people of all ethnic backgrounds to the advert and this shows the purpose.
Point
The adverts key message would be to inform and educate viewers on the specific products they are trying to sell. These adverts were specifically designed to inform viewers on the companies and the products they sale.
The Michael Jackson advert is the same on the newspaper and on television because you can see that during the advert the same image which is used on the newspaper comes up on the television as well and for the nike campaign it features multiple famous celebrities and for the leaflet and the youtube one also features the same celebrity.
Slide six:
The adverts representation for the Michael Jackson adverts would be individual people and social people because it would be aimed at as many people as possible because Pepsi would have wanted everyone to gain attention from it. With the Nike advert it would have been to target racism and sexism.
A moment in the advert for the Michael Jackson one could be when the kid goes into Michael Jackson's dressing room and puts on a Michael Jackson hat and the reason this links with individual and social groups is because at the time Michael Jackson was very popular among everyone so by the kid wearing the Michael Jackson hat and see him turn into Michael Jackson which is what they would want.
For the Nike campaign there cant really be a specific moment however throughout the whole video we can see there are people of all races and both genders and it shows them doing the things they love so this is where the idea of racism issues comes in because they are trying to show no matter what races or gender you are you can still do the things you love.
Both campaigns help sell their products because the Michael Jackson Pepsi one tries to use a famous celebrity to sell their product and nike also uses famous celebrities to help sell their products.
Adverts from the same campaign use the same representation just on different types of media so there are leaflets and newspapers as well as television and youtube clips.
Slide seven:
The Pepsi advert was published in 1987 and was aired on television at the time. The advert would've been shown on a newspaper as well as these were the most used types of media back then. The advert would've been shown all over the world as well. As Pepsi would have tried to gain as much recognition as possible.
As for the Nike commercial it would've been shown in 2018 on youtube videos and television and this would have been for people all over the world as it was to show that all races are the same. The purpose was to show that everyone is equal. The Pepsi advert would have shown when the boy went into the dressing room and drank thye Pepsi because the Pepsi which the boy drank was an old glass bottle with the original white and blue Pepsi logo which seemed to have been discontinued for a while.
For the Nike advert there were a variety of celebrities and they all had a different skin colours so essentially a part in the advert which shows the time where this was produced would be all of it.
Michael Jackson would have been very popular with fans at the time so by Pepsi getting him on the advert would have made a lot of sense. Then for the Colin Kaepernick advert I feel as if racism is trending in today's society so it would have been best to create the video at he time it was created.
They target the same audience by incorporating the same message into each advert.
Slide eight: For the Michael Jackson and Pepsi adverts the type of media wouldve been TV advert for both. The adverts both use the medium because both were published on youtube and the Nike one is a commercial which is on youtube and Michael Jackson one was made on television.
Both adverts tell their message visually which is why they are both suited to the type of media.
Ads from the same campaign carry elements which appeal to all types of audiences but can be shown via a television or even the press so long as everybody understands the message.#
Slide nine:
For the Michael Jackson advert the response mechanism would be mail more then any other because viewers can then write to Pepsi telling them how much they enjoyed the advert however when comparing that to the Nike advert there is a big difference because the Pepsi one was made in 1987 and the Nike one was made in 2018 so there would've been a huge increase in the development of technology so for the Nike advert the response mechanism would be social media as this is where people would go to express their thoughts on the advert.
The response for Pepsi would be to go out and buy the product and it would be the same for the Nike one and they are both appropriate because both companies are in some way shape or form trying to sell their product or make people aware of their company.
They use the same call to action by ensuring the message stays the same.
Slide ten:
Both adverts would have issues such as copyright and violence and offensive behavior because there would've been specific guidelines that both adverts had to follow otherwise it wouldn't meet the required standards to be shown.
For the Michael Jackson Pepsi advert there would've been music by Michael Jackson which is being played in the advert so for that reason Pepsi would have had to get permission for that music to be played by the record label and for Nike there were celebrities and also music being played which would've had to have been non copyrighted or permitted.
These issues for the adverts would've been managed by getting all the required permissions for the company so that they can avoid these issues.
These adverts overcome the issues by getting the right consent needed.
Slide eleven:
Both adverts stay within ASA's guidelines because they for one they do not show any offensive behaviour and two any foul language.
For both adverts we dont see any offensive behaviour as one is dancing and the other is about sports and being yourself so they both stick to the guidelines.
If these advertising campaigns breach the guidelines then it could lead to the campaign being shut down and worse tthe companys could be fined.
Ads from the same campaign stay within the same guidelines by not breaching the guidelines and staying with a similar message to get across to viewers.
